Last Thursday, Collinsville Fire Department joined forces with the Food Bank of North Alabama to host the Park it Market. Some of the Collinsville High School seniors were able to assist those that stopped by with carrying their groceries, passing out bags and information on food banks in the area, and keeping the shelves stocked as customers went through the line. The Park it Market was set up inside of the fire hall to keep people out of the cold weather. Anyone in need of food had the ability to stop by and grab fresh fruits and vegetables.
Nagwa Alzokari, a worker of the food bank, felt called to assist those in need because of her background. When asked what got her started in the business, she responded, “My family in Yemen who sometimes struggled to make ends meet drove me to help.” Nagwa gave a shout out to the businesses in the different communities saying, “We are very grateful for the diners and local grocery stores that make distribution to the community possible.” Nagwa enjoys getting to provide those in need with fresh and nutritious foods, but her favorite part is getting to see the satisfaction on people’s faces because that lets her know they enjoyed it.
When asked about her experience at the Park it Market, Collinsville High School Senior, Emilia Vega said, “The food bank was special to me because it made my day getting to help others. We gave out fresh produce like potatoes, vegetable plates, and fruit. A lot of people showed up and we were glad to help.”
The Food Bank of North Alabama plans to set up in Collinsville again sometime in February. Although they were able to give away around 110 bags of food, they hope to top that number on their next visit.
