We asked students and staff at Collinsville High School about their vision and how it affects their lives. While most people wear glasses or contacts, we don't stop to think about the struggles of people with imperfect vision. Before contacts or glasses were even a thing, people often relied on their other senses such as touch, hearing, and smell to navigate their daily lives. Now that we have access to a variety of different tools that can aid our vision, we can ask people about how imperfect vision affects their lives. We started by asking Miss Marroquin how imperfect vision makes her life more difficult. She mentioned that she dislikes the rain and cold because her glasses get foggy. She wears both contacts and glasses but prefers glasses because they are easier to put on and contacts dry out her eyes. She has been wearing glasses for 19 years and started wearing them when she was 12-years-old.
We also interviewed Mr. Goza about his experience wearing glasses. He stated, “I have been wearing them for four years now and I don't wear contacts as I prefer glasses.” We questioned whether or not glasses made it more difficult for him to drive the bus, and he claimed that wearing glasses does not affect his driving at all.
We also interviewed Gary, an 11th grade student at Collinsville High School, about his experience wearing glasses. He reported that he has only been wearing contacts for three months, but he finds them to be better than glasses. He did add that he believes glasses are quicker and easier to put on. People often don't stop to think about what their life would be like if they had imperfect vision. Those with imperfect vision struggle to see the board in the classroom, they struggle with heavy glasses frames that can sometimes cause facial pain or headaches, they struggle with contacts ripping and falling out, glasses breaking or scratching, and the expenses of eye care. There are many struggles that come with imperfect vision, but luckily we live in an era where something like imperfect vision is usually a simple fix.
