In Ms. Marroquin’s Algebra 2 Class, students were introduced to parent functions and transformations. A parent function is the simplest function of the family in algebra. Ms. Marroquin’s students learned how to graph each parent function which are linear, absolute value, quadratic, cubic, square root, cube root, reciprocal, exponential, and logarithmic. Ms. Marroquin then went on to explain the project students would participate in called #SelfieswithParentFunctions.

With this project, students worked in pairs, or independently. The students were required to take eight selfies where a parent function could be seen. I did my project with a partner, my friend Michayla.

At first, we were a bit puzzled and couldn’t think of places to take a selfie, but eventually we reviewed the parent function notes. Shortly after, we realized that we had parent functions all around us. Parent functions can be found in all kinds of places, even your own kitchen. Ms. Marroquin’s directions for submitting the video stated that the selfies could be compiled in a google doc, google slide, video, etc. I created a video that composed all of our selfies together with some background music.

Altogether, it was a very engaging project that helped me and my partner learn more about parent functions and how they can be found everywhere.
